The NFL is back! Here are the five biggest games of week one.
9/5:
TNF-Packers @ Bears 8:20 PM
Preview: The first game of the 2019 NFL season, the 100th season of the NFL, features one of the NFL's most storied rivalries as the "Monsters of the Midway" and the Bears, face off against the "Cheeseeheads" and the Green Bay Packers. Second year head coach Matt Nagy and his Bears surprised a lot of people last year as they won the NFC North. First year Packers head coach Matt LaFleur will look to replicate that success with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.
The Packers lead the all time series against the Bears 97-95-6. After a few disappointing seasons the past few years, Aaron Rodgers and his Packers are out to prove something. With an improved defense that has added secondary help, as well as pass rushers they are looking like a legit title contender again. The Packers will go into Soldier Field and spread the ball around with their new high powered offense and win a dog fight against the Bears.
Packers 24 Bears 20
9/8:
Redskins @ Eagles 1:00 PM
Preview: This might not be one of the best games on paper, but the Eagles are a Super Bowl contender hosting a division rival in week one. Carson Wentz will be starting his first game since his new mega contract, and DeSean Jackson will be making his return to Lincoln Financial Field as an Eagle. Case Keenum will be starting his first game at Lincoln Financial Field since he lost the NFC Championship game with the Vikings, 38-7. These two divisional rivals have no love lost between them.
The Eagles are the clear cut better team on paper in this matchup. If you look at every position group on both teams, the Eagles have the better group at every spot you could argue. Carson Wentz is going to be on a mission and out to prove something this season and the Birds will make a statement against one of their rivals week one. Look for DeSean Jackson to have a big game against one of his former teams, and the Eagles pass rush to destroy the makeshift offensive line that the Redskins are trotting out. Philadelphia wins big.
Eagles 34 Redskins 17
Falcons @ Vikings 1:00 PM
Preview: This matchup features two NFC Title contenders due to their balance, high powered offenses. The Falcons have a steadily improving defense and the Vikings have one of the better overall units in the league. This game should feature a lot of passing plays with the likes of Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Stefon Diggs, and Adam Thielen. Points will be had in this one.
With both teams offenses equally talented, you have to give the nod to the home team in Minnesota, who also has a superior defense. The Vikings weakest link is their offensive line, and the Falcons pass rushers like Vic Beasley could potentially make a game changing play which could give the Falcons the win. The Vikings will look to get out to an early lead and lean on Dalvin Cook and their defense to run finish it off. Vikings take a close one at home to move to 1-0.
Vikings 31 Falcons 30
SNF-Steelers @ Patriots 8:20 PM
Preview: Surprise, surprise, the Patriots will be unveiling another Super Bowl banner on Sunday night when they host the Steelers. Tom Brady and his Patriots will be viewed as the favorites in the AFC again, but could have some stiff competition with teams like the Steelers and Chiefs. The Steelers will enter a new era with James Conner and JuJu Smith-Schuster as their featured weapons, while they move on from the Antonio Brown/Le'Veon Bell era.
It is hard to pick against the Patriots at home as long as Belichick and Brady still have a pulse. With Josh Gordon returning, and the Patriots staple of multi talented Patriots RB's, New England's quick strike offense should be cooking again. The Steelers have a young and improved defense headlined by rookie LB Devin Bush and they will be an improved unit from a year ago. But, with the Patriots playing in New England to open the season you have to roll with them.
Patriots 27 Steelers 17
9/9:
Texans @ Saints 7:10 PM
Preview: This matchup features two high powered offenses with players like Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, Deshaun Watson, and Deandre Hopkins. Along with the high powered offenses though, both teams possess potent defenses as well which should make for an entertaining Monday night opener.
The Texans have had a lot of moving parts this offseason including the recent acquisitions of Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, and Duke Johnson Jr. They did lose Lamar Miller to a knee injury for the year as well. With all the moving parts, and a lack of chemistry, as well as a road game to open the season the odds are stacked against the Texans in this one. Look for new addition TE Jared Cook to exploit the Texans weak LB's and Alvin Kamara to get a heavy workload in his first game as the feature RB for the Saints.
Saints 30 Texans 24
